BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – For the 17th straight year, a group of All-Stars will be coming to Greater Binghamton to raise money for local causes.
Preparations are underway for the 2018 Jim ‘Mudcat’ Grant All-Star Golf Tournament.
Each year the tournament donates $10,000 to four different community organizations.
For over 10 years The Catholic Charities of Broome County has been one of the recipients.
Executive Director Lori Accardi says the donation they receive from the tournament is crucial to its pantry services, emergency assistance and counseling programs that are all primarily focused on helping children.
“We never really know what the demand is going to be. We provided over 700 thousand meals last year and about half of those were to children and seniors. So it’s really crucial that we keep our pantry stores up, this a really important contribution,” said Seman.
Another recipient is the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse or CHOW.
CHOW also supplies food pantries in our area.
Director Jack Seman says the $10,000 gift can be leveraged to provide 40,000 meals.
Seman says that with 16,000 kids in Broome County receiving free or reduced school lunch, the need is great.
And he says the event helps to spread that message.
“That’s what we’re here for, we’re here for the children and we’re here for the folks that suffer from food insecurity. If people don’t know about it then they don’t know how to help, so these events really raise awareness so people know who’s doing what and how to help,” said Seman.
Each year about 35 professional athletes and other celebrities come to the area to participate in the tournament and support the organizations.
This year’s tournament will be held Thursday. August 30, at the Links at Hiawatha.
