Broome County Council of Churches

CHAPLAINS' CORPS

Rationale:
In times of crisis, individuals and communities need both physical and emotional support. Spiritual Care is a very specialized form of emotional support, best provided by a trained and compassionate Chaplain.

Not every clergyperson is also called to Chaplaincy. The Chaplain's role is unique and different from Evangelist, Pastor or Spiritual Guide. The role of Chaplain demands emotional strength, spiritual fortitude, an open and non-judgmental heart and a non-anxious presence at the most anxious of times.

The Broome County Council of Churches (BC3) in our role to support clergy, congregations and the community, has begun a process of identifying, training and supporting those who are called to this unique ministry. Those Chaplains who meet all requirements will be recognized as Active Chaplains' Corps members.

Eligibility Requirements:
  1. Five years of experience in Pastoral Ministry OR specialized training and endorsement in Chaplaincy appropriate to the religious tradition. This presumes Ordination, Designation or the equivalent.
  2. Endorsement by Denominational superior and/or supervisor, or the equivalent, as determined by the religious tradition.
  3. Endorsement by local congregation or faith body being served, organization being served or body that would be affected by the Chaplain's absence.
  4. Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  5. Successful completion of basic areas of training, if not a member of an appropriate certifying organization or agency.
  6. Successful completion of interview with Chaplains' Corps.
Responsibility and Obligations:
Active members are those currently prepared and willing to respond to a crisis situation, as allowed by their personal situation. Inactive members are those who are a part of the Corps but are currently unable to respond. Those responding as Chaplains MUST respond in the role of Chaplain. Chaplains' Corps members are strongly encouraged to continue with their education, participate in table-top exercises, participate in video and other training and to utilize their skills when needed and appropriate.

The Chaplains' Corps is NOT intended as a replacement for those currently serving agencies in Broome County. That service is a valuable asset to the organizations served. However, in the interest of standardized, recognized training, individuals currently serving as Chaplains for various local organizations are encouraged to participate in the Chaplains' Corps but WILL NOT be credentialed ex-officio.
