Healthier Lifestyle Mentoring

FIA - Nutrition

Do you appreciate the importance of a healthier lifestyle?
Could you use some help developing healthier habits?

The Broome County Council of Churches is inviting you to participate in our Healthier Lifestyle Mentoring project. The project, sponsored by Faith in Action Volunteers, aims to provide guidance and care to those who would like a change in their lifestyle. The Faith in Action program assists their clients with transportation, grocery shopping, respite care, visits, healthier lifestyle, etc. Faith in Action volunteer mentors encourage and assist registered care receivers with:

  1. Planning nutritious menus
  2. Shopping for healthier food choices
  3. Exercising regularly
  4. Managing chronic disease
  5. Smoking cessation

A trained mentor will work with a client one on one in his or her home and assist with special requests for a more improved lifestyle. An example of a session might be demonstrating chair exercises or taking a walk to the park. Each time the mentor meets with his or her client the mentor will review different materials on nutrition, exercise, health or smoking risks. The length of times and number of visits the mentor meets with the client depends on the progress tracked throughout this process. When the mentor believes the client can continue on his or her own, the mentor may follow up with phone calls or e-mails.

This program is free of charge. To become a Healthier Lifestyle Mentor or receive help improving your own habits, contact:

Helping Hands for Independent Living

Tip of the month: Aim to fit in at least 20 minutes of walking a day! Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. And carving out time for a daily walk has many health benefits; feelings of well-being, mental clarity, lowering blood pressure, staying fit, lowering your risk of/managing type 2 diabetes, lowering LDL ('bad') cholesterol and raising HDL ('good') cholesterol.
